Ksenia grew up in Russia and Germany, and has lived in New York since 2008. She is a Senior Research Analyst on HIV/AIDS in Russia, Europe and US at Synovate. Volunteering and helping others play an important role in her life. She was involved in projects supporting children in Germany and was happy to find an opportunity to continue helping children with RCWS in New York, where she was a volunteer for 6 months. If RCWS’ patrons lend a helping hand, we can make great strides in championing a better life for children in Russia. Ksenia is looking to you for support in this year’s ING Marathon.

What role does running play in your life?
I have to admit that I am not a big sports person. I love to go for walks but would never think to do much beyond that, such as climbing or hiking, in my free time. Running, however, has always been more than just exercise for me. Running is very similar to meditation in that it gives me time to think and reflect on matters of importance. Not only do I feel better physically after a run, but mentally as well. Running requires an immense amount of discipline and puts you in a competition with yourself. The person I have to beat is the person I was last week or the person I was yesterday. I love this challenge and therefore I run.
Is it your first Marathon with the RCWS team?
Yes, it is the first one with RCWS and certainly not my last one ;-) I have participated in several half-marathons, but never in a full marathon.
Why is it important for you to support children in Russia?
The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity
— Leo Tolstoi
Even though I left Russia when I was a child, I am still very much concerned with the situation in my home country. Knowing how important it is to grow up in a loving and caring family, I have to think of those who have no one to rely on. Furthermore, in my work as a Research Analyst I am responsible for conducting research on the situation of HIV/AIDS in Russia. The numbers are more than frightening. Only 10% of an estimated 1 million people infected with HIV/AIDS in Russia are receiving treatment. A large number among those are children or youngsters since 80% of new cases occur among people aged 15–30. Because of these reasons, I would like to help children in Russia and to support RCWS in its great work!
